Bighorn lambs spotted in mountains near Tucson

Posted: Updated:

The Arizona Game and Fish Department says two lambs born to bighorn sheep in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson are the first sighted in the area in a generation.

The department says a Game and Fish biologist spotted the apparently healthy lambs in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness from a distance last week.

The lambs were seen close to their mothers. The ewes were among 31 bighorn released in Catalina State Park on Nov. 18 after relocation from mountains in western Arizona.

Game and Fish Regional Supervisor Raul Vega calls the births a milestone in the project to restore a bighorn population in the Catalinas.

The department says hikers should avoid the sheep recovery area during the lambing season. It runs from January through April.
