PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man is in custody in connection with a crash on a Phoenix street that critically injured the other driver.

Merino Carlo Lusterino, 44, was booked into jail after he was released from the hospital Wednesday on suspicion of aggravated assault causing injury.

The crash happened Tuesday morning at a Phoenix intersection. A 32-year-old man was hospitalized in extremely critical condition after his car was struck by a speeding Chevrolet Suburban.

Phoenix police Officer James Holmes said the Suburban that Lusterino was driving was going about 80 mph when it ran a red light at 51st Avenue and Bell Road and struck the 2007 Toyota Corolla after a motorcyclist reported the Suburban almost ran him off the road about 1:50 a.m.

The Suburban was reported westbound on Bell Road from Interstate 17 when the motorcyclist called. An off-duty Phoenix officer heading home in his personal car then saw Lusterino's vehicle at 43rd Avenue and followed it until it crashed, Holmes said.

The impact drove the small sedan more than 200 feet down the road, Holmes said.

He said the officer stopped and tried to help both drivers. The driver of the Toyota had to be extricated, Holmes said.

Detectives said that aside from speed, impairment on the part of Lusterino was suspected to be a factor but that toxicology tests would make that determination.

Holmes said the investigation was continuing.
