Members of the Arizona Legislature's appropriations committees got their first chance Tuesday to question Gov. Jan Brewer's budget director about details of her proposed $9.36 billion budget.
Democratic Rep. Chad Campbell questioned John Arnold about a school broadband plan paid for by a $15 per student fee, saying it takes inflation adjustment money promised to schools. Republican Sen. Rick Murphy also wondered why schools that already did the work by assessing their taxpayers were being required to pay.
Arnold says the money Brewer wants is separate from the inflation funding and that she considers broadband improvements a statewide issue.
The Legislature's own budget analysts also presented a revenue forecast much lower than Brewer's. It shows a $933 million deficit in four years as opposed to her $435 million surplus.
