PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man who beat his girlfriend's son to death because he soiled himself was sentenced to 18 years in prison and lifetime probation on Monday morning.

Judge Warren Granville handed down the sentence after Jorge Busso pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse in the death of 4-year-old Ramon Alejandro Haro Colin of Mesa in December 2010.

Police said Busso whipped the 4-year-old with a belt after the little boy soiled himself.

Busso tried telling detectives the toddler hit his head on the wall. The child was hospitalized with massive head trauma and body bruises and died two days later.

The boy's mother was at work when the child was taken to the hospital.
