The battle to get enough sleep can be especially hard during
the teenage years. Balancing school, a social life, and sometimes work, teens
often forgo sleep trying to fit-in everything.
Now a new study published in the Journal
of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics is showing just how much
influence the start time for the school day can have on kids' sleep.
Researchers tested it out at a boarding high school where it was easy to adjust
the start time.
By delaying the beginning of the school day by 25 minutes,
from 8:00 a.m. to 8:25 a.m., they found students:
Got better sleep the night before
Were less tired during the day
Had better moods
Relied less on caffeine
It's hard to believe a mere 25 minute delay could benefit
kids so much. But some researchers think it all has to do with the circadian
rhythms of sleep.
