Avondale massage parlor busted for selling pot

AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

An Avondale business that passed itself off as a legitimate medical marijuana dispensary was raided by Maricopa County Sheriff's Deputies Thursday night.

Inside, undercover agents located and seized nearly ten pounds of marijuana and thousands of dollars.

The business, Arizona Medical Massage, is located in a busy strip mall just off Dysart road near I-10 in Avondale. A sign hanging in the window offers $39 massages.

Customers were meant to believe this establishment was following state protocols for operating a legal marijuana dispensary. However, Sheriff Joe Arpaio tells CBS5 this business does not have a license and it is not clear whether the owner ever went through the process of attempting to obtain one.

"It's a very lucrative business because of the marijuana, not the massages," said Arpaio.

Deputies also seized two vehicles, a Cadillac and a Corvette. Inside the Corvette, deputies also found a pink revolver.

The investigation had been going on for the past six months, according to Arpaio. This business, he said, has been operating for nearly a year and a half.

"The people buying the marijuana I presume did not know whether this was an illegal front," said Arpaio.

"I was kind of nervous to get out of my car actually," said Kira Sanchez with a laugh as she left the nail salon next door. "I definitely wouldn't have suspected it. I've never seen anyone in there when I've come here for pedicures and stuff. So I wouldn't have guessed."

Arpaio says customers here were asked to produce medical marijuana cards.

When the owner was arrested, she admitted to deputies that she fed her high potency marijuana to a three-month-old dog.

"She would medicate the Chihuahua puppy to calm the dog down," Arpaio said.

The owner is facing felony distribution and animal cruelty charges.
