A second man has been arrested in the drug-related fatal shooting that left a body on a Phoenix canal bank.

Phoenix police said Thursday that Israel Ortega, 18, is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and armed robbery.

Investigators said Ortega allegedly conspired with 19-year-old Isaiah Orantes to take marijuana from a drug dealer on Jan. 7.

They said Ortega drove Orantes to the prearranged meeting location with 20-year-old Robert Patrick Nicolai and dropped Orantes off.

Police said Orantes was fatally shot just south of 47th Avenue and Cholla Street just before midnight Tuesday and Nicolai remains jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder.

A witness who walked down the canal bank found the man and notified police.

An officer was in the area about 11:30 p.m. when he heard gunshots, Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

Officers said Orantes was armed when he was shot, but the handgun hasn't been found yet.

According to police, Ortega is facing a murder charge because Orantes died during the commission of a felony.
