A routine morning traffic stop near Interstate 10 and Riggs Road turned into a SWAT call-out and a suspect search as soon as officers got a look at what was inside the SUV.
DPS said there were three men inside the SUV who managed to run away. Officers looked inside the car and found about 200 pounds of marijuana valued at $125,000.
The three men inside the SUV ran as soon as their car came to a stop about 4 a.m. Tuesday. They ran into the desert area near the freeway.
DPS managed to get their chopper in the air to trail the suspects and tried to get ground crews to the suspects before they managed to hide.
"There's a lot of places to hunker down there. There is thick vegetation in some areas. It's very easy to crawl under some of that vegetation and hide out and wait it out," DPS spokesman Raul Garcia said.
Officers searched the area for several hours but it appears the three suspects managed to get away.
