The Western Athletic Conference today announced its men's and women's Swimmer of the Week for Dec. 12-18 and Grand Canyon University's Iegor Lytvenok and Hannah Kastigar swept the nods following their impressive swims at the UIW Christmas Invitational earlier this week.
Lytvenok, a sophomore from Kryviy Rig, Ukraine, set two individual pool records in a dual meet against the University of the Incarnate Word at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center in San Antonio, Texas. Lytvenok won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:45.85, the best time in the WAC this season. He also won the 200 back with a WAC-best time of 1:44.16, and his time in the 400 IM of 3:48.40, is currently the second best in the WAC. Lytvenok was part of the winning 400 free relay which set a new pool record of 2:56.12, the second fastest in the WAC this year.
Kastigar, a freshman from Aberdeen, S.D., won three individual events and was a member of four victorious relay events in a three-day meet against the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio earlier this week. Kastigar won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:15.92, the best time in the WAC this season by nine seconds. She also set WAC-best times in the 100 butterfly (54.59-exhibition) and 200 butterfly (1:58.06). Her 200 IM time of 2:00.99 is the second best in the WAC this season. Kastigar swam the lead-off leg of the 400 IM and set a school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.32.
GCU will open the 2014 portion of their schedule when they travel to La Jolla, California on Jan. 4. The men will compete against UC San Diego, while the women will square off against the Tritons, San Diego State, and Boise State.
