PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 30-year-old Phoenix man was behind bars on suspicion of kicking and throwing a dog before it collapsed and died in a city street.

Witnesses said they saw Mark Baxter kick the 1-year-old pit bull several times and throw it to the ground before it collapsed in the road in front an apartment complex at 1700 W. Mountain View Road about 7 p.m. Thursday, said Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Martos said Baxter was arrested soon after and told officers he was "aggravated" with the dog and kicked it "with some authority" to make it go away.

Baxter was booked into jail on one count of felony animal cruelty.
