FLAGSTAFF, AZ (AP) -

Northern Arizona University astronomers will be getting partial use of a precious resource -- time on a large new telescope.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports that the university will get 80 nights of telescope use over five years by becoming a partner on Lowell Observatory's Discovery Channel Telescope.

The telescope is located about 40 miles southeast of Flagstaff in Happy Jack in north-central Arizona.

NAU is getting its research time in exchange for payment of a little over $1 million.

Other schools already in the partnership include Boston University, the University of Maryland and the University of Toledo.

NAU professors will use their nights to study Kuiper Belt Objects at the outer edge of the solar system.

The instrument will also be a teaching tool for NAU astronomy students.
