Prosecutors in northern Mexico now say five men have been killed in a gun battle with police and military personnel in the Gulf of California resort of Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point.

The attorney general of the border state of Sonora says the shootout occurred in and around Sandy Beach near a luxury hotel in Puerto Penasco early Wednesday.

The Mexican consulate held a news conference in Phoenix at noon on Thursday and said those who died were firing at federal police agents. The Mexican consulate said the police agents were defending their life. Their identities have not been released at this time.

The Mexican consulate also said they want to reassure travelers that the resort is a safe place for tourists. Shootouts are very rare at Mexican beach resorts.

Attorney General Carlos Navarro Sugich said two of the men died when they crashed their vehicle trying to flee authorities during the confrontation.

Puerto Penasco is popular with visitors from Arizona, just across the border.

The U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Sonora, advised U.S. citizens in Puerto Penasco to shelter in place. They advised people there to review their personal security plans, remain aware of their surroundings and monitor local news stations for updates.

The consulate said to regularly monitor the State Department's website to know current travel warnings.
