TEMPE, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

Fans clung onto hope as long as they could, waiting for a miraculous Sun Devils comeback.

"We got the fourth quarter," Dalton Lucht said. "After this, we're a fourth quarter team."

Another quarter didn't help Arizona State football. The Sun Devils fell to Stanford 38-14 Saturday night.

Without a score in the second half, fans began the long walk back to their parking lots early.

"We're taking the walk of shame," Nick Salgado said.

With temperatures dipping into the 40s, fans huddled in blankets with the look of disappointment, describing that walk home as deflating, upsetting and sad.

"The energy was just gone," Salgado said.

After the game, fireworks lit up the sky, but for many fans it was tough to watch. The show wasn't for a Sun Devils' win but instead it celebrated PAC-12 champion Stanford.

Although the game was disappointing, football fans said they're proud of their team. The Sun Devils still have the PAC-12 South crown and as the saying goes, there's always next year.
