FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -
A 25-year-old Phoenix man is in the Pinal County Jail after he was stopped with 420 pounds of marijuana in the truck he was driving early Wednesday morning.
A Pinal sheriff's deputy tried to pull over a 2004 Chevrolet pickup for speeding on Arizona Highway 84, according to a PCSO spokesman.
The truck sped away and stopped after it ran into a concrete culvert as it was turning toward a farm field. The driver and two other men jumped from the truck and ran, the spokesman said.
The deputy ran down and captured the driver, later identified as Ignacio Nunez, but the other two escaped, the spokesman said.
Deputies found 20 bundles of marijuana worth about $315,000 in the bed of the truck and also found a handheld radio with several batteries, the spokesman said.
Nunez told deputies he was offered $2,000 to take the marijuana and two other men to Phoenix in his truck, which he claimed was loaded with the pot by people hiding by the side of the highway, the spokesman said.
He said he accepted the offer so he could send money to his sick parents in Mexico.
Nunez was booked into jail for possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of marijuana, possession of marijuana and felony flight.
