PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A tip about an illegal drug buy in a West Valley supermarket parking lot resulted in the apprehension of four people and almost 100 pounds of marijuana by Arizona Department of Public Safety officers.

The drug transaction was reported to be at a Food City at 91st Avenue and Thomas Road early Tuesday morning, a DPS spokesman said.

As DPS officers approached a pickup truck in the lot, eight people ran. Officers caught all eight and detained four of them, the spokesman said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was called to determine the citizenship status of the eight, the spokesman said.

The four detainees were custody for further investigation of possession of marijuana.

About 100 pounds of marijuana was seized, the spokesman said.
