Officials say private information of current and former students, workers and suppliers at the Maricopa County Community College District was exposed because of security vulnerabilities in the district's computer systems.
The district announced Wednesday that names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and bank account information was exposed. It is notifying nearly 2.5 million students, suppliers and employees and will provide credit monitoring and other services.
The district has 10 community colleges and about 265,000 students attend classes each year. District spokesman Tom Gariepy says the total number of people affected is about 2,489,000.
Gariepy said the district is mailing out letters to those affected. No company email was sent out.
"That's a big issue, especially since I haven't (received) an email. I haven't received anything from the student center. I had no idea until you told me," said Laura Cartwright, who attends Phoenix College.
Chancellor Rufus Glasper says there's no sign any personal information has actually been misused.
Gariepy says the FBI found someone offering to sell district data in April.
Several district information systems workers are being disciplined.
The district has set aside $7 million for a call center, credit experts and credit monitoring for those affected by the breach.
