WASHINGTON (CBS5) -

Several Phoenix area protesters have joined a national fasting event in Washington in support of immigration reform.

Cristian Avila, of Phoenix, who traveled to the nation's capital last week, entered his 14th day fasting on Monday. Promise Arizona volunteer Maria Leyva entered the eighth day.

Immigrant rights and labor leaders launched Fast for Families: A Call for Immigration Reform and Citizenship on Nov. 12. It is taking place on the National Mall.

Leaders and immigrant members of the community are fasting every day and night to try to persuade congressional lawmakers to pass immigration reform with a path to citizenship.

Across country, more than 3,000 activists have signed up to fast for various periods of time, according to national organizers for Fast for Families.
