BUCKEYE, AZ (CBS5) -

The inspiration behind a Verrado High School video for a national contest by pop singer Katy Perry was Perry's special guest at the American Music Awards on Sunday.

Megan Squire and her family were contacted by Perry's management team recently and informed that Squire and some of her friends would be at the AMAs with Perry at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, where Perry performed.

Squire, a school cheerleader for four years who has overcome the challenges of Down syndrome, and her schoolmates created the video to win a free concert at their school by Perry.

A Colorado school won the contest, but Perry said she was so touched by Squire's story that she decided to invite Squire and some of her friends to an event where Perry would perform.

Verrado High School in Buckeye was one of five finalists for the Perry concert. Each school produced a video interpretation of Perry's hit song Roar.
