PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

The community came together Saturday to help two Peoria residents who were badly burned in a massive home explosion last month.

Beau Zimbro and Tiara del Rio were placed in medical-induced comas after that explosion.

The pair had suffered burns covering up to 60 percent of their bodies.

Neighbors and family held a benefit carnival at Peoria High School over the weekend.

Some of the money raised will help cover the cost of up to 30 skin-graft surgeries that del Rio is expected to undergo.

"Tiara took some steps two days ago so she's starting to walk and getting better," said Michelle Pesquera, Tiara's godmother. "Beau is getting better as well."

Zimbro also has second-degree burns to 60 percent of his body, but they aren't as deep as his girlfriend's.

About $3,500 was raised at the carnival.

Zimbro and del Rio awoke last week after being in a coma for nearly a month.

Neighbors said they heard and felt a loud explosion around 9:20 p.m. Oct. 16 and saw two people running from the home with burn injuries.

Tiara's mom, Christina del Rio, called Zimbro a hero for saving her daughter's life.

"They were both on fire, and he carried her," she said. "He picked her up and he carried her out of the house."

Doctors said that because both patients are young and healthy, their prognosis is good.

Family and friends have set up accounts at gofundme.com and donateto.com to help with Tiara del Rio's medical bills.
