State pays tribute to local veterans

BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) -

Connecticut's two senators are spending Veterans Day pushing two bills aimed at helping homeless veterans.

United States Sen. Chris Murphy said every night there are about 600 Connecticut veterans who are considered to be homeless. He said the number has started to decline, but it's still way too high.

A 24-year-old Marine who served in Afghanistan, Daniel Rosado said the thanks and support on Veterans Day makes him proud, but it's not always this easy.

"After I got out of the military there was a lack of guidance," he said.

Murphy addressed that very issue during a pancake breakfast Monday morning with veterans and local leaders in Bristol.

Murphy is co-sponsoring the Homeless Veterans Prevention Act. Currently there are 62,000 veterans across the country without access to stable and secure housing. He said it's an issue many current vets are facing when they get back from war.

This bill aims to provide more funding for transitional housing programs, including specific funding for women veterans. It would also increase the availability of legal services for homeless vets and expand existing dental programs, and employment programs for homeless vets.

"There are more problems than ever with veterans coming back from multiple tours and we deserve to spend just a little money on treatment, compared to all of the money that we spent to fight the war," Murphy said. "That's just the right thing to do."

Last week a similar bill aimed at battling homeless vets and backed by fellow United States Sen. Richard Blumenthal passed in the Senate.

Rosado said he appreciates the support not just on this day, but going forward as well.

"I feel at home," he said. "To tell you the truth, it feels like someone cares."
