WATERFORD, CT (WFSB) -
The Waterford Police Department are searching for the two people who entered the Macy's in the Crystal Mall on Wednesday and walked out with hundreds of dollars worth of clothing without paying.
The two suspects entered the department store around 1:30 p.m. An unidentified man was approached by a security guard, however police said he ran into the parking lot and fled.
Waterford police Lt. Dave Burton said retailers should move popular items away from the doors and put more personnel on the floor, especially during the holiday shopping season.
"They will think nothing of taking an armful and running out the store with it," Burton said.
Detectives said surveillance video is good insurance towards capturing shoplifters. The owners of Surplus Unlimited in Norwich use several cameras to prevent criminals for burglarizing their store.
"We can get better characteristics of facial recognition, clothing," said store owner Mike Matera. "That helps us out drastically."
While Matera told Eyewitness News nothing is 100 percent foolproof, they said they are always watching and listening.
Police told Eyewitness News retailers aren't the only ones, who have to be on alert now. Police warned shoppers to protect their credit cards.
"If you're going to use a credit card make sure nobody is standing over your shoulder trying to get your information," Burton said. "Don't leave your credit card with the teller, you take it with you."
Police also warned if you are going to pay something by check, shoppers are advised to do it in a private secure setting and not leave that information out there for someone else to use.
Anyone with any information about the burglary at the Crystal Mall is asked to call police at 860-442-9451 or message its Facebook page.
