WOODBINE, GA (WTOC) -
A Miami man was arrested and charged Friday with trafficking marijuana, obstruction of an officer, an improper lane change and failure to maintain a lane of travel.
Glynn County Sheriff's Officer Sgt. Cedric Brown conducted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Caravan for an improper lane change and failur5e to maintain a lane of travel.
When Brown approached the vehicle, Ruben A. Arencibia, 37, was hesitant to roll down the window. When the window was rolled down, Brown smelled an overwhelming odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, according to the Camden County Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Brown had Arencibia step out of the vehicle and asked if he had been smoking marijuana, which Arencibia initially denied. He then said that he was smoking a "joint" and threw it out of the window prior to the stop.
Brown asked for consent to search the vehicle, but Arencibia did not grant consent. Brown then informed Arencibia he was going to deploy his K-9 partner, Chacal, due to the fact of the odor of marijuana and Arencibia's statement of smoking a "joint".
K-9 Chacal gave a positive alert on the vehicle for the presence of illegal narcotics.
Arencibia was informed that his vehicle was going to be searched. When officers opened the van doors, Arencibia ran toward the tree line. He was apprehended shortly after and handcuffed and placed in the back of the police car.
When officers searched the van, they came across several black garbage style bags with leafy green material inside. The van was transported to the Camden County Sheriff's Office Substation and secured there pending a search warrant.
A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle and the vehicle was searched at the Substation, where 11 large plastic bags with green leafy material was discovered.
The material was field tested and was identified as marijuana.
Each of the bags were weighed individually, with the total was estimated at 228.44 pounds.
Arencibia remains in custody at the Camden County jail.
