Explosion in Chicopee hydroelectric building causes flooding - CBS 5 - KPHO

Massive pipe break at hydroelectric plant in Chicopee

Posted: Updated:

What appeared to have been a massive water pipe break caused hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to spill from a hydroelectric plant in Chicopee Thursday. The plant is owned by Essential Power LLC.

Around 1:30 p.m. water was seen gushing from the building located in the Cabotville Industrial Park near Front St. Water for the plant is fed by a canal which comes from the Chicopee River. Crews had to shut the flood gates feeding the canal and let it drain.

After the water receded, crews were able to get in and survey the damage from the rushing water. Asphalt was washed away in several areas near the plant and a hillside next to a massive smoke stack also eroded, exposing some utility pipes.

Authorities evacuated a mill next door as a precaution.

Nobody was injured.
