MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

The Mesa-based Nammo Talley munitions company is known for making shoulder-launched weapons, but now a lot of attention is on their newest product; an advanced hand grenade.

"We're as proud as we can probably be of a very recent award of a scalable hand grenade," said Nammo Talley President Scott Selle.

Selle said the company recently secured a federal contract worth up to $40 million to provide U.S. Special Forces with the high-tech grenades. The specialized weapons allow servicemen and servicewomen to choose blast levels based on various situations. Instead of carrying three different strength grenades, for example, soliders could just carry one. The grenade is modular, so in tight spaces, one charge could be used instead of the maximum three.

"You don't want to use too much firepower. You don't want too much effect in an effort to reduce collateral damage," explained Selle.

"You can combine them together for maximum impact or scale them down to reduce collateral damage," he continued.

With the recent government shutdown, Selle said production could be delayed.

"On site, we have government quality inspectors who are responsible for verifying some elements of our products before we ship them to warfighters. They're on furlough this week. They're not here," he said.

Selle doesn't believe the contract will be canceled, but he says the shutdown definitely is having an impact.

"It comes at a very important time when we're trying to respond to the drawdown in the global war on terrorin Afghanistan and Iraq. We're fighting the impact of the sequestration and now the government shutdown," he said.
