D-backs limp to finish after strong start

PHOENIX (AP) -

The Arizona Diamondbacks played more baseball during the regular season than any team in history.

It may have left them too tired to finish the job.

Logging nearly nine full games in extra innings and besieged by injuries, the Diamondbacks limped to a second straight 81-81 finish this season after leading the NL West at the All-Star break.

Arizona had key players out on extended trips to the disabled list and again had troubles in the bullpen, which tied Houston for most blown saves in the majors with 29.

The Diamondbacks were superb defensively, though, and players like left-hander Patrick Corbin and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt had huge seasons.

General manager Kevin Towers isn't expected to make major changes this offseason, maybe adding to the bullpen and a power bat.
