Early Saturday morning, police said John Alexander, a 22-year-old city resident, was shot and killed in an apparent gang related shooting.
Saturday night, Mayor Domenic Sarno went to the site of the shooting on Westminster Street and spoke with the people that gathered to remember Alexander.
"It was after 9 p.m. or so, to speak to them not only about sympathy and condolences, but more importantly, to each and every one of them, they need to be part of the solution," said Sarno. "There were people in that crowd that know who exactly did this."
The murder of Alexander is the third homicide Springfield police are investigating over the past two weekends. Sunday morning, Sarno put full faith in the city's law enforcement.
"This is a very, very active investigation and I believe our police department will bring the perpetrator to justice," Sarno stated.
With a memorial set up on Westminster Street, Sarno said it is a reminder not just of Alexander's life, but of the 15 homicides the city has investigated this year and homicides that occur across the country. He said individuals considering a life of crime should think twice before going that route.
"If you want to play with fire, you're going to get burned," said Sarno. "What more is it going to take, as far as gang or drug activity, there's only a couple of places you're going to go and they're not good. You're either going to get arrested, injured, or you're going to get killed."
Sarno stressed that anyone with information on the homicide should contact police, saying they can utilize the anonymous ways to do so, such as text-a-tip.
