PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Peoria man was sentenced to 14 years in prison and a lifetime probation for child molestation.

Commissioner Jeffrey Reuter sentenced Terryl Peters on Friday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

Peters, the husband of former U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, had earlier pleaded guilty to one count of molestation of a child and two counts of attempted molestation.

Peters was arrested in June 2012 by Coconino County deputies after an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of a child.

Mary Peters served as the director of Arizona Department of Transportation before she became the U.S. transportation secretary in 2006. Her term ended in 2009.

While in office at ADOT, she was recognized as the Most Influential Person in Arizona Transportation by the Arizona Business Journal.
