FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

A Pinal County man is recovering after he was shot by a sheriff's deputy just outside Casa Grande.

The man was described as suicidal and had pointed a handgun in the direction of the deputy who had been trying to coax him out of his home, sheriff's investigators said.

Scott McCreery, 41, suffered a gunshot wound to his right ear.

McCreery's wife called 911 at about 1 a.m. Wednesday following a argument at their home in the 9500 block of W. Desert Mountain Dr.

The woman said McCreey twisted her arm behind her back and pushed her into the bed, according to PCSO. The woman said she left the bedroom and when she returned, her husband was pointing a shotgun at her. He then allegedly grabbed her but she was able to get away.

Her husband then went into the backyard and a short time later she said she heard a gunshot. She said she saw him slumped over in a chair, according to PCSO. She said she thought her husband had just killed himself.

She went back into the home, grabbed her 8-year-old son and called 911. As she was leaving, she said she saw her husband slumped over on the living room floor.

When deputies arrived, they ordered McCreery to come out of the house. When he emerged, authorities saw he was armed with a handgun and ordered him to drop it.

PCSO said McCreery lifted the handgun from his side and pointed it at one of the deputies. The deputy feared for his life so he fired two rounds from his department-issued handgun.

McCreery went back into the residence and a short time later tossed his handgun into the front yard. When he refused to come out, PCSO's SWAT team was mobilized. They were successful in coaxing him out.

McCreery was booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center on charges of aggravated assault, domestic violence involving a handgun and aggravated assault on a police officer.
