Oregon minimum wage rising: Workers to get $9.10 in 2014

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon's minimum wage workers are getting a raise.

The state is increasing the minimum wage to $9.10, an increase of 15 cents per hour.

Labor and Industries Commissioner Brad Avakian said the change allows Oregon's 98,000 minimum wage workers to keep up with the rising cost of essential items.

The wage increase will go into effect Jan. 1, 2014.

The increase is expected to generate more than $20 million in new consumer spending for Oregon's economy, Avakian said.

A 2002 ballot measure directs the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries to adjust the state's minimum wage annually based on inflation.
