School systems that share a state line will also share a grant to support military children and families.
The Clarksville-Montgomery County, TN, school system and schools in Christian County, KY, will take part in the $4.5 million project.
It's part of a Defense Department grant aimed to help schools connect with military children and their parents by fostering communication and improving reading proficiency.
Officials say roughly 20 percent of the two counties' student populations will benefit from the projects they build together.
"Even though we are Kentucky and Tennessee, we do share this wonderful military installation, and we know that we have the same concerns and the same opportunities to reach out to families in both communities," said Christian County Superintendent Mary Ann Gemmill.
About 10,000 students across Christian and Montgomery counties are military connected and come with unique needs.
School officials say they hope their collaboration to help military families navigate and connect with the community will help their students excel in school.
