AVONDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near the corner of 3rd Street and Western Avenue.

Avondale Police say one of their officers was shot in the face. Police said he was flown to a local hospital and is recovering in stable condition.

According to Avondale Police Sgt. Brandon Busse, the officer fired back at his suspected shooter. The suspect died from those injuries.

This officer-involved shooting had several witnesses because of a streetside art show on the Western Avenue.

"I heard 15 shots," witness Trisha Sandoval said.

Sandoval, who is trained in medicine rushed to the police officer and helped him until medics arrived.

"He knew what day it was, he said it was hard for him to breathe, but he was conscious," she said.

What happened leading up to the exchange of gunfire between the officer and his suspected shooter is unclear.

Police are not releasing the names in this investigation until a later date.
