HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

An inmate from Hawaii was found dead in his cell at the Hartford Correction Center Friday night and state officials said they are investigating it as an "apparent suicide."

Guards found 31-year-old John Matthew Tyhurst of Pearl City, HI with "a ligature tied around his neck," during a routine check at 8 p.m., Connecticut Department of Correction officials said.

Tyhurst was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford where he died a short time later, DOC officials said.

There were no other inmates in the cell, DOC officials said.

Tyhurst was being held on an employing a minor in an obscene performance charge. He has incarcerated at the Hartford Correctional Center since July 30.

An autopsy will be performed on Tyhurst to determine his manner and cause of death.

The incident remains under investigation by state police and DOC officials.
