Hassell was the driver for Michael Crane when the burglary and homicides were committed on Jan. 30, 2012, according to Paradise Valley police Lt. Michael Cole.
Hassell had previously been arrested in connection with the case and charged with two counts of burglary. Now investigators say they believe they have enough evidence to seek murder charges.
More than half a dozen other people, including Crane, were previously arrested in connection with the deaths of Lawrence and Glenna Shapiro, whose bodies were found in their burning home.
The philanthropists, in their 70s, were found tied up and burned beyond recognition in their home and their luxury car was stolen.
In a statement released Wednesday, Cole said sufficient evidence was collected to request an indictment against Hassell for homicide, burglary and conspiracy.
Paradise Valley police detectives presented their evidence to the grand jury on Tuesday and a $1 million bond arrest warrant was issued. Detectives coordinated with a Phoenix Police Department felony warrant team and Hassell was arrested around noon on Wednesday.
Others previously indicted and arrested include Kelly Ann Steward, 29; Brittany Beinhauer, 27; Shawn Nicloy, 29; Danielle Elaine Rossman, 25; and Katherine Adele Austin, 25. They face charges including theft, trafficking in stolen property and hindering prosecution in connection with both the Shapiro and Gaudet homicides.
Another suspect, Maricela Otelia Sanchez, is still in a Yuma jail. She was originally arrested in Yuma, after she refused to cooperate during a traffic stop and then led officers on a high speed chase before finally being stopped. The car she was driving was that of Phoenix murder victim Bruce Gaudet. She was arrested on a murder charge in Gaudet's Jan. 26, 2012 death.
Crane and Sanchez went to Gaudet's home and with a gun, robbed, restrained and killed him, according to a an indictment previously handed up. They then took the stolen property and left in Gaudet's car, according to police.
In addition to the two murder counts for the Shapiro homicides, Crane faces two counts of kidnapping, one count of first-degree burglary, two counts of arson of an occupied structure and two counts of armed robbery.
