Police desperate for tips in Wal-Mart manager slaying

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It's been more than a year since a manager at a west Valley Wal-Mart, Peter Marquez, was gunned down during a holdup.

"He just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and that person decided that money was more important than my dad's life," said Marquez's daughter, Monica Marquez.

During an interview, she held tight to her father's photograph as she remembered the man who raised her.

"He was always happy. He was the type of person that would always be there for you whether he knew you or not," said Marquez.

The two worked side-by-side at the Wal-Mart near 75th Avenue and McDowell for six years. Then just after midnight on April 7, 2012, Monica Marquez got a phone call. Her father had been shot on the job.

"The suspect entered the store the same time that employees had a grocery cart filling up the various cash registers. It was very coincidental, if not intended. The suspect took the entire grocery cart with the money and wheeled it out of the store," said Silent Witness Sgt. Darren Burch.

That's when police said the suspect came face-to-face with Peter Marquez and pulled the trigger.

"They didn't think twice about who's father they were taking. They just did it for their own selfishness," said Monica Marquez.

Outside the store police say there was no getaway car. The suspect ended up grabbing just a few handfuls of money, hopped a fence and took off. Investigators believe the man is currently in hiding.

"We are hoping when you look at the video, you look at the entire video, his mannerisms," said Burch.

Monica Marquez thought there would have been an arrest by now but says she and her family refuse to give up on one day having closure.

"We pray every day and just hope that they catch him soon," said Marquez.

If you have any information you're asked to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
