PHOENIX (CBS5) -

On Monday, cars were stopped at intersections, yielding to rushing water on Greenway Avenue. In other places, backyards filled up like swimming pools.

"It was coming down in sheets," Joan Acker said.

Acker moved into her north Phoenix home in 1976 and says she's never seen rain and flooding like what she saw on Monday.

"I've seen it rain maybe once or twice before where it's got filled up in the backyard," Acker said. "It's never got on the patio."

Monday was a different kind of rain, going beyond Acker's patio and nearly into her home.

"I called my daughter and said, 'We may need sandbags,'" she said.

Most homes in the north Valley didn't experience any flooding, but some found minor water damage. Drivers faced other issues.

"I had to wait it out for about an hour," one driver said. "I was in the middle [of the water]."

That driver had to phone for help afterwards because her car wouldn't start.

The north Valley is taking a break in the weather to dry off and hope for the water to subside.

"I was worried," Acker said.
