PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix security guard hired by a homeowners association is recovering after he was shot trying to break up a fight, police said.

Officers arriving at 8100 W. Globe Ave. early Sunday morning found an unarmed, uniformed security officer lying on the ground, said Phoenix police Lt. Gabe Lopez.

The guard suffered a gunshot wound to the back at around 1:43 a.m.

He told officers that he came across several people fighting and tried to intervene. Two people in the group opened fire, Lopez said.

The security guard, whose name was not released, was rushed to a nearby trauma center and is expected to be OK.

The suspects fled the scene. No descriptions were available.
