University of Arizona football senior linebacker Jake Fischer has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Of the 30 candidates, 12 have grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. Seven are All-Americans and 12 were all-conference selections in 2012.
Majoring in marketing with a 3.363 cumulative GPA, Fischer is on track to graduate in December 2013 but may add an additional business management major to graduate in May 2014. He is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree and was a 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.
Fischer was named a team captain as a junior in 2012 and was twice Arizona's defensive representative for Pac-12 Football Media Day. A member of the 2012 AFCA Good Works Team nominee, he has collected more than 40 hours of community service in his career. He serves as a big brother on the football team, specifically mentoring one new freshman, and is a founding member of Arizona football's chapter of Uplifting Athletes. He is also an Arizona Student-Athlete Advisory Committee member.
On the field, he is a member of the 2013 Lott Award Watch List and 2013 Bednarik Award Watch List. He has played in 40 games and has never missed a game in his competitive seasons (redshirted in 2011). Fischer was named 2012 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention, is a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Week and was the 2012 team leader in tackles with 119 (76 solo and 43 assisted). Last season, he averaged 9.15 tackles per game, was third on the team in TFL with 6.5 for 16 yards, forced three and recovered four fumbles and had a career-high 14 tackles in the 59-38 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State.
Earning his 22nd career start, Fischer paced a resurgent Arizona defense in a season-opening shutout of Northern Arizona, 35-0, on Fri., Aug. 30. He led the team in tackles with seven.
From the list of 30 candidates, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in November. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in early January.
The Wildcats will take to Sam Boyd Stadium on Sat., Sept. 7 to play UNLV. The 7:30 p.m. contest will air on CBS Sports Network.
