GM to lay off 135 employees at Defiance Powertrain plant

DEFIANCE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

General Motors has announced it will be laying off 135 workers from its Defiance Powertrain plant starting next month.

The company has issued the following statement:

GM is committed to the delivery of top quality, fuel efficient engines and components for our customers. To enable this, the product mix of our newer engines has more aluminum content.

Reduced demand for iron casted engine components will require a staffing reduction at our Defiance Operations, affecting 135 employees. 48 of the 135 employees are temporary, and therefore their assignment will end on September 30th

55 are permanent employees and 32 Skilled Trades employees.

A phased layoff plan will begin by the end of September and conclude by the end of the year.

Defiance Mayor Bob Armstrong says the plant is the largest business in the city, and cutting 135 employees in a city the size of Defiance is going to affect everyone.

"It's very upsetting, I think, when we're doing all we can to plan for the future, to make plans for the city of Defiance to grow, and then to have our number one business say, 'We've got to lay off people,'" he said.

Located on State Route 281, the facility - nearly 2 million square feet in size - opened in 1948. According to GM's website, there are 1,309 employees total. Millions of dollars have been invested in the facility to increase efficiency and enhance capabilities.
