MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

A controversial ordinance that could allow Mount Juliet employees to bring guns to work was put on hold Monday night.

The amended ordinance would allow city employees with valid permits to carry handguns while they're on the clock.

On first reading, four of the five city commissioners voted in favor of that proposal.

City residents are divided on the issue.

"Come, bring your families. But if you go to City Hall, beware, because they could be packing," said Sidney Payne, who is against allowing employees to carry guns. "I don't think that's what we want for our small city."

"The issue we need to look at is criminals," said Jeremy Hayes, who is for the proposal. "Criminals don't care if there's a sign up that says 'Gun Free Zone.'"

If the ordinance is approved, it could cause insurance to rise for each city worker, and all on the taxpayers' dime.

Mount Juliet has 120 employees, including more than 40 police officers who are already allowed to carry firearms.

The ordinance will be considered again on Dec. 9.
