The Phoenix Mercury, WNBA and My Black Is Beautiful are partnering to host the "Imagine a Future WNBA Pre-Game Huddle" prior to the Mercury's matchup against the Seattle Storm on Friday, August 23 at US Airways Center on the practice court from 4 – 6:45 p.m. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
WNBA alumna Tamika Raymond will host the event for local African-American girls, ages 12 – 17. Phoenix Mercury alumna Adrian Williams-Strong, former ESPN anchor and current FOX Sports Arizona personality Cindy Brunson and ABC 15's Sonoran Living Live host Susan Casper will participate as guest speakers.
As part of the ongoing partnership with My Black Is Beautiful, the event will include a screening of the short-documentary, Imagine a Future, which follows the journey of Janet Goldsboro – a young African American girl who travels to South Africa where she examines the historical and present beauty and self-esteem issues that challenge black women and girls. The film is also infused with the perspectives of renowned entertainment personalities such as Mikki Taylor, Gabourey Sidibe, Michaela Angela Davis, Tatyana Ali, Gabrielle Douglas and Melissa Harris-Perry.
Following the documentary, Raymond, along with the guest speakers, will conduct a Q&A session with the girls in attendance about the documentary. During the discussion attendees will be encouraged to express their feelings about the film and how it relates to their lives as young women. In addition, each girl will receive a ticket to the Mercury-Storm game, goody bag and t-shirt, courtesy of the WNBA and My Black Is Beautiful.
The "Imagine a Future WNBA Pre-Game Huddle" series was created to encourage discussion around self-esteem and empowerment in young African-American women. The event will take place in six WNBA markets during the 2013 season as part of the new partnership with My Black Is Beautiful.
