Wildcats' Rivera-Morales wins Bronze Medal

The University of Arizona Wildcat track and field program had a former athlete and a volunteer assistant coach compete in the finals of their respective events at the 2013 IAAF World Championships.  Friday marked the seventh day of competition. The final day is August 18th.

Luis Rivera-Morales of Agua Prieta, Mexico earned a third-place finish in the men's long jump with a mark of 27-1.75 (8.27m). Rivera-Morales became the first athlete in Mexican history to win a medal in the field events at the World Championships. He entered the competition with the No.1 jump in the world on the season (27-9.25, 8.46m), but now he has the No. 2 mark. The gold medalist, Aleksandr Menkov (Russia), jumped 28-1 (8.56m) today. The second place mark was 27-2.5 (8.29m), set by Ignisious Gaisah (Netherlands). Rivera-Morales holds the indoor school record in the event and he was a Pac-10 Champion in the long and triple jump in 2009. At the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Rivera-Morales took sixth place in the long jump and earned first-team All-America accolades. He earned NCAA Indoor All-America honors in the long jump in 2010 with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

In the final of the men's 5K, volunteer assistant coach Bernard Lagat earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 13:29.24. Lagat, 38, was the top finisher for the U.S. Mo Farah (Great Britain) won the gold medal with a time of 13:26.98. He also won the 10K. Lagat earned a silver medal at the World Championship in 2011 in the 5K with a time of 13:23.64. He also claimed silver at the 2009 World Championships with a time of 13:17.33. It was Lagat's fifth trip to the World Championships.

The final athlete with ties to Arizona is Brigetta Barrett She will compete in the final for the women's high jump at 6 p.m. on Aug. 17 in Moscow. In MST, that competition will begin at 7 a.m. on the same day.
