The Phoenix Suns revealed a stylish new look that reflects the bright future of Suns basketball, with modern twists on iconic Suns uniforms of the past Thursday night.
Suns players Eric Bledsoe, Caron Butler, Archie Goodwin, Alex Len and P.J. Tucker donned the new uniforms for the first time during a public runway show at Scottsdale Fashion Square.
In sticking with tradition, the Suns will wear white uniforms at home and purple on the road. For the first time, the team will wear an orange, sleeved uniform which will serve as an alternate for Friday home games beginning in January.
The Suns worked with adidas to develop and design the uniforms over the past two years, with assistance from Valley-based ad agency, Fisher.
The new design, deemed "Speed of Light," integrates elements of movement that symbolize the Suns historically fast-paced style of play, one that helped revolutionize the NBA game.
Angled, beveled letters with "speed" lines built into the design, as well as shooting sun rays across the chest, represent the team's legacy of up-tempo basketball.
Other design features pay tribute to the Suns rich history, including the nine sunrays on the jersey, which represent the nine Suns Ring of Honor members who wore a Suns uniform. The overall jersey design was inspired by the Suns' beloved jerseys of the '90s, while the rising sun on the shorts is reminiscent of that on the original Suns uniforms.
"We wanted the uniform to reflect our rich tradition and the up-tempo style that is synonymous with Suns basketball," said Phoenix Suns president, Jason Rowley. "We feel like we have integrated those elements into a modern look and innovative design that every Suns fan can be proud of."
The Suns are the second team in the NBA to introduce a short-sleeve uniform. The newest in adidas' line of basketball innovations, the NBA Uniform System (short sleeve uniform) unites performance and bold, unique style.
The uniform features a ClimaCool system with engineered body-mapped zones to provide maximum ventilation, as well as 360-degree stretch fabric for free range of motion. Made with 60 percent recycled materials, the uniform sports reduced seams to optimize natural movement and decrease friction between the skin and the uniform. The new style provides yet another apparel option for fans to support their favorite players with authentic on-court gear.
Each of the new Suns jerseys is available for pre-order exclusively at Suns.com. Fans who purchase jerseys during the pre-order will receive free shipping.
The new uniforms mark the team's fourth overall uniform design in team history, and first uniform change since 2000.
The Phoenix Suns will open the 2013-14 season when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at US Airways Center. Single-game tickets are on sale now at Suns.com/tickets, or by phone at 602-379-SUNS.
