$40,000 given to widow of officer killed on duty

Posted: Updated:

A charity run by one of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's posses has given $40,000 to the widow of a Phoenix police officer who was killed in the line of duty more than two months ago.

A check was presented to the wife of Officer Daryl Raetz.

Police say Raetz was making a drunken driving stop on a vehicle May 19 in west Phoenix when another vehicle struck him.

The six-year police veteran later died in a hospital.

Sheriff's spokesman Joaquin Enriquez says no public money was used in the donation.

Enriquez says the money that was given to Raetz's wife came from fundraising by an Arpaio posse that consists of business people who raise money for the families of officers killed in the line of duty.
