Construction is expected to begin in the coming months for the USA Basketball headquarters and training center on more than 10 acres in Tempe owned by Arizona State University.
Under a 99-year lease agreement with the university, a $436 million complex would be built with a 4,500-seat arena for basketball and other events, a 30,000-square-foot conference center and an Omni Hotel at the southeast corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive and called "USA Place."
The plan also includes luxury apartments and retail and office space.
USA Basketball, led by familiar Valley sports icon Jerry Colangelo, is currently headquartered in Colorado Springs, CO, and would make the move in late 2016.
USA Basketball serves as the national governing body for men's and women's basketball in the U.S. They are officially recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as being solely responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships, according to the release.
