USA Basketball has chosen Tempe as the new home of its headquarters and training center.
It would be part of a new development called USA Place, and would include a 30,000-square-foot conference center and an Omni Hotel hotel at the southeast corner of Mill Avenue and University Drive.
The hotel would be Tempe's first four-diamond hotel and along with the USA Basketball headquarters would anchor USA Place, according to a news release.
The City Council and Board of Regents still have to approve the deal.
The plan also includes a 4,500-seat events center, luxury apartments and retail and office space.
USA Basketball, led by a familiar Valley sports icon, Jerry Colangelo, is currently headquartered in Colorado Springs, CO, and would make the move in 2015.
USA Basketball serves as the national governing body for men's and women's basketball in the U.S. They are officially recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) as being solely responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, including the Olympics and World Championships, according to the release.
