PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 2-year-old boy has died after he was pulled from a Phoenix canal two weeks ago, Phoenix police said Wednesday.

Gabriel Cordova was walking along the canal near 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road about 10 a.m. on July 25 when he fell in, said Phoenix police spokesman Tommy Thompson.

A Phoenix police officer who was responding to the call jumped in and pulled the toddler from the water. She then began to perform CPR, Thompson said.

The officer is a 34-year veteran of the police force.

Thompson said the boy was being watched at his home by his teenage siblings and was believed to live nearby.
