Unemployment in Conn. rises as job growth stalls

WETHERSFIELD, CT (AP) -

Job growth in Connecticut was essentially flat in June as the unemployment rate edged up to 8.1 percent.

State labor officials said on Thursday that a longer school year due to two storms earlier this year disrupted hiring and may influence summer hiring patterns.

The state gained 500 nonfarm jobs. The gain is small, but it marks the fourth consecutive monthly job increase and the fifth monthly gain in the first six months of 2013.

The unemployment rate ticked up from 8 percent.

Connecticut added 10,600 nonfarm jobs, or 0.6 percent, since June 2012. Private sector hiring declined by 3,200 in June.

Connecticut has recovered 58,700 jobs, or fewer than half of the 121,200 jobs that were lost in the recession from March 2008 to February 2010.
