Police cars and yellow caution tape blocked off a section of Main Street in West Springfield Thursday evening.
Captain Thomas Wilkinson, of the West Springfield Police Department, said they received a call shortly before 6:30 p.m. for an accident at 184 Main Street.
Witnesses told CBS 3 the child was crossing the street with his mother.
They said he was a couple of feet behind her when the car hit him.
A gray Honda sat on the side of the road with a large dent in its hood.
The boy was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where Captain Wilkinson said he was in critical condition.
Officials searched the area for hours, reconstructing the scene.
Residents said this stretch of road is a problem spot for speeding cars, and hope that something will be done to prevent more accidents like this one from occurring.
