ROCKY RIVER, OH (WOIO) -
Chris Perez is a $7 million a season All Star reliever for the Cleveland Indians but on Tuesday he was walking into Rocky River Municipal Court with his wife Melanie to face one count each of a misdemeanor drug abuse charge.
Monday Chris pitched a scoreless inning with a strike out in a loss to the Detroit Tigers.
On Tuesday he refused to answer a simple question asked by our Scott Taylor.
"Some people would call you a role model. Can you explain to the kids how in the world you would have marijuana sent to your house or mailed to your house," asked Scott Taylor.
Last month police say two packages containing marijuana were mailed to Chris's house from the west coast.
A postal worker noticed a marijuana smell so officials did an undercover delivery and executed a search warrant at Chris' pad. Chris and Melanie ended up being charged.
"I just want to give you a chance to explain why in the world would you have marijuana mailed to your house," stated Scott Taylor.
The priority mail was addressed to Chris's dog Brody with a last name of Baum, which is Melanie's maiden name. Investigators say Chris showed them where he kept his marijuana in the house and told them it was for his own personal use.
The Perez defense team asked for more time in court. The judge continued the pre-trial until September 3 -- is a plea deal in the works?
Chris and his wife have entered a plea of not-guilty.
