SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Springfield police made an arrest hours after the body of 19-year-old Tyshianna Atkins was discovered Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, the man police say is responsible for her death, 22-year-old Terrance Brown, faced a judge.

Cries and shouts could be heard from family members and friends of Atkins as Brown, her boyfriend, entered a Springfield District courtroom.

Not guilty pleas were entered on his behalf to several charges, including the murder of Atkins.

Police say that Atkins was shot once in the chest inside of a Federal Street apartment. Authorities say that after the shooting Brown dumped her body on the sidewalk, and fled the scene.

Friday's court appearance was a quick one, as Brown will be appointed a new attorney next week.

There appeared to be as many court officers in the room, as family members present. And, as Brown was escorted out in handcuffs, those officers were forced to step in to keep the crowd under control.

Brown was held without the right to bail, until a second court date on Tuesday.

This was Springfield's 11th murder of the year.
