SYLVANIA, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Metroparks Spokesman Scott Carpenter says a dog attack Friday morning injured a couple walking their dog. He says the attack happened around 8:30 a.m., but was not reported until about 9:30, when the couple called from a local hospital.
The couple told a Metroparks ranger that they were walking their 1-year-old pit bull when they were attacked by what they believe was another pit bull running loose.
Steve Thompson and Nicole Ferrel said they tried to break up the dogs when they were bit by the stray.
There were two other dogs with the dog that attacked, but those two did not take part in the attack.
The Metroparks closed the eastern portion of Wildwood, including the entrance off Corey Road. Trails are posted closed and extra rangers are patrolling the park. The main entrance to the park remains open.
Carpenter says the dogs have not been seen in the park since the attack this morning.
"We have never had an incident of this severity before. The track record here at Wildwood is... very safe," he said.
Sylvania Township Police and the Lucas County Sheriff's Office have also been looking for the dogs.
A hospital spokeswoman says the couple was treated and released from the hospital.
